The Monbukagakusho has 6 different scholarship categories, including Research, which is for applicants who already have Bachelor's degrees and who are interested in studying in Japan to pursue a Master's, PhD, or a short-term research project. One year of Japanese language training is included (if necessary), and the scholarship covers tuition, airfare, and provides a monthly stipend. In addition to other applicants, the Consulate General of Japan in Miami is allowed to choose a JET alumnus or alumna every year for either the Research or any other relevant scholarship type! So, who will it be next? Maybe it's your turn!

JETS GATHER TO CELEBRATE THE NEW YEAR
February 5, 2010
by Abby
Once again, JET alumni gathered in the home of Michael Maloney and his family for the annual Shinnenkai, or New Year Celebration! Relying on some quick calculation, Michael realized that they have hosted the JETAA Shinnenkai for the past 10 years! Those gathered enjoyed a fabulous sushi spread from Yoko's Sushi and Michael's famed Curry Rice!
As ever, our gathering was not limited only to JET alumni, but also included friends, colleagues and even some interested applicants!
Thanks to everyone for making it out and a huge thank you to Michael and his whole family for once again hosting such a fabulous event! Be sure to see the pictures here!
LECTURE AT THE MORIKAMI MUSEUM AND GARDENS
February 3, 2010
by Wendy
“Bridging Japanese and American Styles of Communication” which will be held on Thursday, February 11, 2010 at 7:30 pm (museum doors open 6pm) with speaker Dr. Lauren Crane. Cost: $7 for members and $10 for non-members.
Here is a brief description of the Lecture:
Every culture has unspoken communication norms that need to be followed in order to seem polite. Because our own culture’s norms are as familiar to us as the air we breathe, we usually are unaware of them unless we sense something “strange” going on. Yet in interactions between Americans and Japanese, shared familiarity with these norms cannot be assumed, and “strange” feelings can lead to dysfunctional relationships. Dr. Crane’s lecture will focus on how we can form more accurate impressions and feel more comfortable in cross-cultural interactions by becoming more aware of each other’s norms.
